Bangabasi Morning College owes its conception to the rich and cultural heritage of the hallowed institution of Bangabasi College;founded by Acharya Girish Chandra Bose ,a great patriot and follower of Pundit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar,has completed its hundred years of glorious existence about two decades ago.Historically speaking ,Bangabasi Morning College started its career as a unit of Bangabasi College as far back in 1947.It was at this time when the country own its long cherished freedom the college experienced an unprecedented pressure of over numbering students.The partition that followed after independence was the immediate reason for such.The roll strength of the college began to swell heavily with the influx of young students from the East Bengal and the college has to open shifts in the Morning and Evening Hours.The Story of the BANGABASI MORNING COLLEGE may be said to begin from this crucial juncture of national life.Thus,in its initial stage,BANGABASI MORNING COLLEGE continued its existence as a shift unit of its mother institution.This continued for about seventeen years,till mid-sixties of the last Century,when in 1964-65,under the Phased Reduction scheme of the UGC,these different shifts turned into separate autonomous college.From that time onward,BANGABASI MORNING COLLEGE has acquired her own identity as a full fledged independent institution,affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

B.A.(Hons),B.A.(General),B.Sc(Hons),B.Sc(General),B.Com.(Hons),B.Com (General).There is no PG Course in the college.The number of subjects (included in the three programme options) taught in it are sixteen (16).Of them only Computer Science ( Hons and general ) is the only subject which is self-funded.Programme with elective options are 12 in numbers.All the programmes are mainly on Lecture based Annual system.However all of them are in the modular form.During the last five years four(4) new subjects were introduced in the college.Environmental Science and Computer Science are the two subjects of contemporary relevance taught in the College at present.Most of our students are from low middle income group,minority communities( mostly Muslims ) and first generation learners.
The duration of the Academic year in every affiliated college under University of Calcutta starts from July and ends in the month of June in the following year.The no. of working and teaching days in the last Academic year was 232 and 206 respectively.Though the no.of sanctioned teaching posts are 40( including Principal) 33 are filled and 6 are vacant.Added to this 3 Graduate Laboratory Instructors have been designated as Teacher by the order of Hon’ble Supreme Court .Of the Non-teaching Staff 38 posts are sanctioned ,36 posts have already been filled up ,of which 16 are Technical Staff .Apart from that there are one Contractual full time teacher in the Computer Science 17 Part time teachers and 7 part-time Non-teaching staff also.
Permanent teachers of the college are appointed on the basis of the recommendation of the West Bengal College Service Commission.About one-third teachers of the college have Ph.D as the highest qualification.Some of the faculty served as the resource person in different Workshops,Seminars etc.teachers avail themselves the Refresher courses and Orientation Programmes organized by the Academic Staff College,University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University as faculty development Programme.Two UGC-sponsored National level Seminar were organized by the College the last Five years and proposal for another one has already been submitted to the Eastern Region office,UGC.Apart from that some Departmental Seminars were held in the college .Non-Teaching staff are recruited by a selection committee formed by the Governing Body.Bridge courses are offered to the two-year pass graduate to upgrade qualification to the three year graduate degree.Student assessment of faculty performance is also in existence,Self appraisal of faculty was introduced in the college and is a part of the promotion to the further scale.Some of the faculty and staff are also involved in additional administrative works entrusted by the college.4 teachers are engaged in the minor Research projects funded by the UGC.
In every year Students Union of the College publishes an Annual literary magazine of high quality under the guidance of a renowned teacher of the College.Added to it,two quarterly wall magazines are also published by the Dept.of Bengali and Zoology.Students,Non-teaching staff and teachers express their literary proficiency on different aspects of the contemporary society there.The college has a NCC wing under 1st Bengal Battalion NCC India Army ½ Coy whose strength 150 cadets 100 Senior Division Boys and 50 Senior Divisions Girls College Cadets.One college teacher has been entrusted duty as Officer –in-duty of the NCC Wing.The BANGABASI MORNING COLLEGE is run in the same building where Bangabasi College and Bangabasi Evening College also run.Notwithstanding acute space problem ,the infrastructure and learning Resources jointly shared by the three Colleges are

Apart from the above ,the college has a Physics laboratory and a very small Computer Science room and a student Union Room of its own.In addition to it the college has been able to acquire an abandoned dilapidated primary school recently from the KMC for 66years lease in order to extend its academic activities by reconstructing it in near future.
The College library with the reading room,co-shared by other two colleges has a rich collection of valuable old books and journals-some of them are rare apart from a good stock of new titles on various subjects.The working hours in the library are four hours on the working days as there is the problem of overlapping after a stipulated time of the College because Bangabasi College starts from 10.30 A.M.The institution possesses a play ground and pavilion on the Calcutta Maidan,shared by three college.With the active active co-operation of students Union ,College organises inter class football and cricket completion ,Inter college table tennis competition and Carrom tournament.The Annual Sports of the college is very colorful where not only the boys and girls students participate but also non-teaching and teachers actively participate.In addition to it there is a spacious and beautiful auditorium ,co-shared by the three college where meetings seminars and cultural activities are regularly held.In cheap Canteen students collect food articles and snacks at a cheap rate.
The student strength is 2356 at present.Most of our students are from different districts of West Bengal.The drop out rate is high(20-25)% in every year.The poor and meritorious students are provided with the opportunities to get free and half –free ships and financial help from the students Aid Fund.Socio-Cultural activities like the Freshers Welcome ,Annual Social Function ,Inter Class Cultural Competition etc.regularly take place in the college under the leadership of Student Union.The student also actively participated in the colorful procession of the 150th Foundation Ceremony,of the University of Calcutta on 24th Jan,2005.The Percentage of success in the University Examination of our students is on average 87% during the last 5 years.A Grievance Redressal Cell has been formed by the Governing Body in order to consider Complaints/Grievances fro any Corner of the College. A Complaint box has already been hung up in front of the Library to collect the complaint/Grievances.Alumni Association which was formed in 2005 is organizing free health Check ups and ECG and Blood donation Camp with the help of students Union of the college regularly since its inception.Parents are requested by the teachers of different Departments in order to intimate the poor performance of their wards and low percent attendance.
Teaching Non-teaching ratio in the college is 1:1 .Percentage of the post filled under reserved categories are 18% in case of teaching and 7.5% in case of non-teaching staff.Financial resources of the college mostly comes from the Grant-in-aid in salary head funded by the Govt.Of West Bengal.The Annual budget of the college is generally placed before the Governing Body at the beginning of every academic session.In it,estimated expenditure on allowances of temporary teaching and non-teaching staff on books and journals,building development,maintenance ,electricity ,Sports,Examination, Lab equipments ,Furniture,Seminars etc is depicted.
The college is run by the management of a Governing body constituted according to the STATUTE No 93 of the University of Calcutta First Statutes,1979.Generally a minimum of (4) meetings of the Governing body are held in an Academic Year.Apart from that there are other administrative and Academic bodies formed by the Governing body like Finance sub-committee,SC &ST Cell,Grievance Redressal Cell etc.Meetings of such sub-committee and council take place according to the need of the college. Added to this there are Teachers Council ,Admission Sub-Committee and Library Sub-Committee and P.F Sub-committee in the college .meetings of such council and sub-committees also take place from time to time .As a welfare scheme,approved and permanent teaching and non-teaching staff of the college avail themselves of the scope of P.F Loan and Festival Advance .Computer is used by the office for maintaining accounts ,preparing records of the students etc.
There is very little scope on the part of the college to involve in the Health Practices in a wide scale.Short duration of working hours,lack of space etc.stand in the way in performing such extra academic activities.Notwithstanding such limitation college partially imparts value education and makes the students conscious about the campus of the college and surroundings through the contents of Environmental studies in their Curricula.Girls students are also enlightened with the education which plays catalyst role in awakening the women community of their surroundings.
